PhD Candidate in Modeling and Simulation of Microgrids/Local Grids with Different Energy Sources at NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY – NTNU

About the position

For a doctoral position, the objective is a complete doctoral training until obtaining a doctorate.

The department has a vacancy for a PhD position in the field of Microgrid/LAN Modeling and Simulation. The increasing development of distributed generation based on renewable energies, the volatility of energy prices and the problems of security of supply have made research related to microgrids/local grids increasingly important.

The PhD student will work on modeling and simulation of control and monitoring of microgrids with different sources (like wind and solar) and loads in different operating situations. Additionally, the candidate will explore the protection of the microgrid when connected to the overhead grid and when disconnected from the overhead grid (this includes e.g. short circuit calculations, stability analyses, frequency stability ).

Furthermore, the candidate will study the interaction between combined heat and power, which supplies heat and electricity to the local thermal/distribution network, and a micro-grid with different energy sources. In this line, energy flexibility and demand response, battery storage for microgrid control and regulation, grid-connected battery optimization for frequency control and balancing of the phase shift in networks with reactive power from inverters will be studied.

You will report to the Head of Service.

Job duties

  • Provide valid scientific contributions from the candidate’s research area to the development of microgrids/smart grids
  • Develop the methodical, ethical and scientific approaches necessary to ensure quality research
