Mozilla is working on improvements to Firefox’s PDF reader. Firefox will soon support light PDF editing tasks such as text or ink annotations.
The built-in Firefox PDF reader is a popular tool for viewing PDF documents in the browser. Firefox users can use it to view local PDF documents or PDF documents from the Internet in the browser.
Some Firefox users like the idea of opening PDF documents in the browser because it’s a quick and easy process. Others prefer to use third-party tools and disable the PDF viewer. External tools may offer better functionality or security features.
Firefox’s PDF reader does support form filling, but that’s the extent of its capabilities at this point. Mozilla plans to improve the functionality of the built-in Firefox PDF reader by adding lightweight editing tools to it.
Firefox PDF Editor
The editor is currently in development, but Firefox Nightly users can already activate it for testing.
- Load about:config into the Firefox address bar.
- Confirm that you accept the risk and wish to continue.
- Find pdfjs.annotationEditorMode and set the preference value to 0.
A restart of Firefox is not necessary. When you load a PDF document into Firefox now, whether it’s a local or online PDF file, you find new editing options in the main toolbar.
The following tools are included in Firefox PDF Editor at the time of writing:
- Text annotation tool with options to change font color and size.
- Handwriting annotation tool with options to change link color and thickness.
Closing words
Mozilla improves Firefox’s built-in PDF viewer; This is a good thing. The PDF viewer will support text and ink annotations, and possibly other features that Mozilla may introduce at a later stage of development.
Several other browsers, including Microsoft Edge, offer a superior editing experience at the time. Microsoft’s browser supports text and handwritten annotations, as well as text highlighting. The new PDF editing options bridge the gap with browsers like Edge, which is probably one of Mozilla’s goals.
Now you: do you prefer to view PDFs in the browser or other tools? What about PDF editing? (via Techdows)
