18% of teleworkers spend only one hour per day on their main tasks. 83% of people working from home spend 1-3 hours a day correcting mistakes, while 81% spend less than three hours a day on creative work.

These statistics regarding the daily work habits of remote employees were revealed in a survey by Zapier, automation providers for small businesses.

Basic function jobs are neglected

Determined to find out how remote workers spend their time, Zapier interviewed 1,000 knowledge workers from small businesses across the United States.

As remote working has become the “new normal†for many businesses and their employees, it’s important for employers to know how remote teams are spending their time.

The fact that 18% of homeworkers devote only an hour a day to tasks considered essential may sound alarm bells for employers.

As the Zapier report notes: “The majority of people (29%) say they devote 4 to 5 hours a day to their main duties. An alarming 18% said they only spend about an hour a day on these essential functions.

The majority of teleworkers spend little time doing impactful work

The study also found that most workers (81%) spend less than three hours a day on creative work. 76% of teleworkers say they spend less than 3 hours per week on strategic tasks.

Alarmingly, 83% of survey participants report spending 1-3 hours a day covering or catching up with a colleague’s work.

90% of remote workers spend up to five hours a day checking work email apps like Slack or Microsoft Teams.

Over three-quarters (76%) of workers spend up to three hours a day entering data, while a similar number (73%) spend 1-3 hours trying to locate particular information or document.

The survey found that 45% only spend an hour a day in meetings and 69% say they spend less than an hour a day procrastinating.

Biggest productivity blockers

The survey asked teleworkers what their biggest time savings were.

Rather than meetings or task procrastination being the biggest barrier to productivity, according to the survey, the most common productivity barrier is burnout.

38% of teleworkers surveyed consider burnout to be their biggest obstacle to productivity. This was followed by 35% of workers citing time management as the main obstacle to maintaining productivity. 31% said their most common barrier was multitasking, while 30% cited repetitive work as the biggest barrier to productivity.

Zapier’s findings highlight some of the biggest challenges affecting remote working setups. It is essential that productivity is maintained throughout the work day when employees are working from home.

With so many remote workers admitting to spending much of the day entering data instead of focusing on core tasks, businesses may consider using bots or automation to take care of the job. more mundane tasks, so remote workers can focus on more impactful work.
