Previously, people scoffed at the idea of switching to a Linux-based operating system due to a lack of software. While that’s still true for some people – especially business users – it’s less of a concern these days. Why? Well, so much is done through the web browser these days, which reduces reliance on Windows software. For many consumers, just having the Google Chrome browser on, say, Ubuntu, is more than enough to meet their wants and needs. Not to mention, there are plenty of great Linux apps out there like GIMP and DaVinci Resolve.

But okay, let’s say you really want to use a Linux-based operating system, but there’s Windows-only software that you absolutely can’t live without. Luckily, you can always ditch Windows and upgrade to something like Fedora or Linux Mint. How? ‘Or’ What? Thanks to the excellent Wine! This compatibility layer (isn’t it to dare call it an emulator), can sometimes allow you to run Windows software on Linux. Today version 7.0 was released.

“The Wine team is proud to announce that the stable version Wine 7.0
is now available. This release represents a year of development effort and over 9,100 individual changes,” says Alexandre Julliard, Wine Developer.

The developer shares the following areas where major changes have been implemented. You can see a full changelog here.

  • Most modules converted to PE format.
  • Better theme support, with a grouped theme for a more modern look.
  • Significantly improved HID stack and joystick support.
  • New WoW64 architecture.

Before you get too excited, know that Wine isn’t flawless. Some apps and games work fine, while others may be slow or buggy. There can be a lot of trial and error involved. Unless a certain Windows-only program is essential to you, I’d recommend finding a Linux alternative instead – or opting for a web-based solution – such as Microsoft’s excellent Office Online. In other words, in many cases Wine should be a last resort.

If you are ready to download Wine 7.0, you can get the source here. Looking for an easier way to install it? You can download the appropriate packages here.

What Windows-only software is stopping you from switching to Linux? Please tell me in the comments below.

How Northern California HR leaders are tackling remote workers over office workers, mental health support and recruiting in a tight job market http://www.webfilebrowser.org/how-northern-california-hr-leaders-are-tackling-remote-workers-over-office-workers-mental-health-support-and-recruiting-in-a-tight-job-market/ Wed, 16 Aug 2023 06:26:06 +0000 http://www.webfilebrowser.org/how-northern-california-hr-leaders-are-tackling-remote-workers-over-office-workers-mental-health-support-and-recruiting-in-a-tight-job-market/

Lynn Ichinaga: Team members embraced Friedman’s discretionary personal leave program which was extended during the early stages of the pandemic to provide flexibility and relief to various personal circumstances. These leave requests enabled our customer-facing and business team members to take care of their health and that of their families and were freely granted with minimal information required.

Our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) continues to be beneficial, helping team members access guidance, as well as resources to manage a variety of stressors inside and outside of work. These include financial advice, child and elder care resources, legal resources, stress management techniques, and detailed information on physical and mental health and well-being.

To continue to provide a safety net for our team members, we have extended supplemental sick pay and maintained our employee emergency fund, which is still available for those in need.

Linda Lang: I wouldn’t say that HR has directly received more requests for mental health support, but we assess needs based on the amount of contact employees and their families have with our Employee Assistance Program. Although EAP never discloses employee names and other details, we do receive digital usage reports regularly. As a result, we have asked our EAP to hold on-site development sessions to inform employees of the services available to them. In addition, we have increased the number of chaplaincy hours provided in our spiritual care service to meet the needs of patients, family members and our staff. We have seen a tremendous increase in staff awareness of our non-denominational chaplains.

Beverly Murray: Providence provides many mental health services/resources to our caregivers (all employees are referred to as caregivers whether or not they provide bedside care) in-person at select facilities, same-day virtual services, programs/apps wellness and traditional mental health provider services. We have also increased training opportunities on managing stress and burnout.

Stephanie Reynolds: Yes, we have been receiving more and more inquiries about our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and new employees have become interested in our insurance plan’s mental health options. Previously, questions about new insurance plans focused on co-pays and emergency room visits.

Tiffany Veille: Yes. We have invested in a robust Employee Assistance Program that provides comprehensive mental health services and provides our staff with fully employer-paid medical insurance.

Melanie Wise: Absolutely. Over the past two years, we have seen an increase in burnout, exhaustion and stress factors, mostly related to influences outside of work, such as the political environment, family, illness and/or inflation. We’ve seen more and more employees request time off, change careers, or quit their jobs altogether.

We already had an Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) in place that provides up to six sessions with a mental health professional at no cost to the employee. We have also changed some of our leave policies to provide more flexibility. We have included floating holidays and reiterated that staff can use sick leave for their mental health needs. We constantly follow what is happening in the market because our goal is to stay at the forefront on this issue.

Lori Zaret: Our company policies have always included access to mental health support. However, we recognize the impact the pandemic has had on our employees and their family members, and our collective mindset has changed; we are now even more aware and empathetic towards everyday mental health needs.

After the North Bay fires, we recognized the need for more time off during times of stress and implemented ongoing wellness programs. Due to the pandemic, we have further expanded these programs and continue to explore new ways to help our employees and their families.

Are your department or company’s recruiting and hiring efforts more or less difficult now? Please tell us why and how you and your business have had to adapt.

Ashley Baker: Recruitment and hiring are much more difficult. We had to increase starting pay rates, work harder to find passive candidates, promote work-from-home options to candidates, bring in temporary staff, reassign duties from open jobs to existing staff members and increase employee referral bonuses for candidate referrals. who are hired.

Kristina Derkos: Luckily, due to RCU’s reputation as a great place to work, I think it made it easier for us. We haven’t had the “big quit” yet and our retention rates continue to be high. However, we have certainly seen the number of candidates applying decrease, as many job seekers choose to take sabbaticals to take care of themselves before re-entering the workforce.

Japanese recruiting firm Pasona Group Inc. has announced that it will launch a service next month focused on introducing Japanese companies to overseas computer engineers who will be working remotely from their homes despite travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On November 1, Pasona will launch its cross-border remote human resources service, covering highly skilled people in the IT field in countries such as India, South Korea and Vietnam, according to a press release last Tuesday.

The recruiting agency said it aims to connect around 300 IT professionals to companies in Japan over a three-year period. Tasks such as developing smartphone apps and creating websites will be given to these workers directly by companies in Japan or through local Pasona offices, according to the company.

By 2030, Japan is expected to face a shortage of up to 790,000 computer scientists, according to a 2019 survey conducted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

As interest in recruiting foreign talent by Japanese-based companies grows, travel restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic have prevented domestic companies from bringing in workers from overseas, Pasona says .

The recruiting company said it primarily targets IT talent in Asian markets where it already has a presence or is considering expansion, working with local science universities to secure staff.

Using the eval command in Linux to run variables as commands http://www.webfilebrowser.org/using-the-eval-command-in-linux-to-run-variables-as-commands/ Tue, 15 Aug 2023 19:43:41 +0000 http://www.webfilebrowser.org/using-the-eval-command-in-linux-to-run-variables-as-commands/

There are probably many Linux users who have never encountered the rating ordered. In fact, it’s not really a “command”, but a builtin bash intended to treat the value of a variable as a command. For example, if you set up a variable that includes the command to display the current time in Sydney, Australia, it would probably look like this:

$dt=”TZ=date ‘Australia/Sydney'”

You can then run it like this:

$eval $dt

Thu 7 Jul 06:32:14 AEST 2022

This can save you from having to memorize the Date command syntax and specifying a time zone, but let’s take a closer look rating to see what else it can do for you.

The bash manpage will tell you a bit more about the rating command, although you have to scroll almost 5,000 lines to find it. There is, after all, no manual page for the built-ins. Here is what he would tell you:

Arguments are read and concatenated into a single component.

mand. This command is then read and executed by the shell, and

its exit status is returned as the value of eval. If there is

no arguments, or only null arguments, eval returns 0.

Of course, for anything you do by typing commands in the terminal window, rating isn’t likely to save you much time or effort. You could, after all, create an alias to do the same job for you. Here’s what it would look like:

$alias dt=”TZ=date ‘Australia/Sydney'”

$dt

Thu 7 Jul 06:37:31 AEST 2022

Save this alias in your .bashrc file and you can easily check what time it is in Sydney whenever you feel the need.

However, when creating a complex multi-part command, especially in scripts that need to collect the necessary data as they run, use rating executing the command can make executing the command much easier.

For example, while working on a recent script, I needed to find five-letter words, specific letters in known positions, and other specific letters in uncertain positions. I also knew that a number of letters were not included in the words I had to find. Step by step, the script built a long chain of grep commands to iterate through the word file to find only words that match my specifications. Here is an example of what such a command might look like with all its grep (match) and sound grep -v (ignore) commands and match found:

$ grep ^ch..t$ /usr/share/dict/words | eval grep -v ‘q’ | grep -v ‘w’ | grep -v ‘r’ | grep -v ‘y’ | grep -v ‘u’ | grep -v ‘I’ | grep -v ‘o’ | grep -v ‘p’ | grep -v ‘s’ | grep -v ‘d’ | grep -v ‘f’ | grep -v ‘g’ | grep -v ‘i’ | grep -v ‘k’ | grep -v ‘l’ | grep -v ‘z’ | grep -v ‘x’ | grep -v ‘v’ | grep -v ‘b’ | grep -v ‘n’ | grep -v ‘m’ | grep a | grep e | grep -v ..a.. | grep -v …e.

Cheat

In fact, if you run this command on your word file, you should get the same response. If you turn it into a variable as shown below, it will work the same.

$ cmd=”grep ^ch..t$ /usr/share/dict/words | grep -v ‘q’ | grep -v ‘w’ | grep -v ‘r’ | grep -v ‘y’ | grep – v ‘u’ | grep -v ‘i’ | grep -v ‘o’ | grep -v ‘p’ | grep -v ‘s’ | grep -v ‘d’ | grep -v ‘f’ | grep -v ‘g’ | grep -v ‘j’ | grep -v ‘k’ | grep -v ‘l’ | grep -v ‘z’ | grep -v ‘x’ | grep -v ‘v’ | grep -v ‘ b’ | grep -v ‘n’ | grep -v ‘m’ | grep a | grep e | grep -v ..a.. | grep -v …e.”

$eval $cmd

Cheat

My script uses rating to run the $ cmd variable as a command and passes the output to the column command that makes the output more useful when there are tens or hundreds of matching words. The result in the example shown was the single “cheat” word pulled from nearly half a million lines in the word file. All I had to do was answer a few questions about what I knew and what I didn’t know.

eval $cmd | column

Wrap

The rating The command can be used to execute simple or very complex commands which are saved as variables. It evaluates commands and variable arguments and then executes them. This is particularly useful when constructing long and complicated commands, especially in scripts where the details depend on data changing or responses provided as the scripts run.

Australian uranium explorers Deep Yellow and Vimy agree on merger deal worth $493 million http://www.webfilebrowser.org/australian-uranium-explorers-deep-yellow-and-vimy-agree-on-merger-deal-worth-493-million/ Tue, 15 Aug 2023 13:27:28 +0000 http://www.webfilebrowser.org/australian-uranium-explorers-deep-yellow-and-vimy-agree-on-merger-deal-worth-493-million/

Both companies have agreed to a merger through a scheme of arrangement under which Deep Yellow will acquire 100% of Vimy shares on offering, the statement said.

Each Vimy shareholder will receive 0.294 fully paid Deep Yellow common shares for each fully paid Vimy common share held. If a merger goes through, Deep Yellow shareholders will own 53% of the combined company and Vimy shareholders the remaining interest, the statement said.

“Deep Yellow’s expanded strong technical team along with Vimy personnel positions us well to bring both projects online when uranium prices support the generation of long-term, sustained positive cash flows,” said John Borshoff, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of deep yellow.

The combined company is estimated to have a pro forma market capitalization of approximately A$658 million, cash and cash equivalents of approximately A$106 million and no balance sheet debt.

Vimy’s Board of Directors unanimously recommends that shareholders vote in favor of the Scheme in the absence of a superior proposal.

Paladin Energy, another Australian uranium producer, said in a statement it intends to raise more than A$200 million in capital to help restart its Langer Heinrich uranium mine in Namibia.

MGLRU might land in Linux 5.19 to improve performance – especially in low RAM situations http://www.webfilebrowser.org/mglru-might-land-in-linux-5-19-to-improve-performance-especially-in-low-ram-situations/ Tue, 15 Aug 2023 04:21:51 +0000 http://www.webfilebrowser.org/mglru-might-land-in-linux-5-19-to-improve-performance-especially-in-low-ram-situations/

MGLRU is a kernel innovation that we are looking forward to seeing merged in 2022 and it looks like it might happen for the next cycle, v5.19, to improve Linux system performance, especially when approaching the memory pressure.

MGLRU is short for Multi-Gen LRU and is a redesign by Google engineers of how kernel page fetch code is handled. They found that the current Linux kernel page fetch management is too expensive and can make poor eviction choices, but MGLRU has proven to be a great improvement both for their internal workloads and by external parties testing the many public patch revisions.

Check out some of the compelling MGLRU benchmark results for workloads benefiting Apache Cassandra, Hadoop, Memcached, PostgreSQL, Redis, MongoDB, FIO, and many other workloads. Or even for those cases of running a web browser with many tabs when you often face system memory pressure and SWAP storms, MGLRU has kept systems in a usable state.

Google’s Yu Zhao today sent Linus a pull request for MGLRU. While the Linux 5.18 merge window is underway right now, Yu wasn’t necessarily to push it just yet,”This is more of an option than a 5.18 request. I am sending it to you directly because, in my opinion, it is now as ready as it will ever be.

In the Linux kernel mailing list thread for this pull request, Linus Torvalds stated that he was not opposed to it, but that he would ultimately not use it for Linux 5.18. The basis being that MGLRU has not been fully checked through the linux-next tree. He wants to see this big patch series running in Linux-Next for a while to help uncover any issues, especially with all the build automation/testing going on for Linux-Next.

So at this point it looks like Mutli-Gen LRU could go into Linux-Next for about a cycle and if all goes well it could be merged for Linux 5.19 this summer. There are also more endorsements which would be appreciated, but the main reason not to merge with 5.18 is the lack of exposure to Linux-Next.

Previous MGLRU Developer’s Summary.

Here’s hoping MGLRU comes to Linux 5.19! ]]> Remote work possible for only 11% of the Brazilian workforce http://www.webfilebrowser.org/remote-work-possible-for-only-11-of-the-brazilian-workforce/ http://www.webfilebrowser.org/remote-work-possible-for-only-11-of-the-brazilian-workforce/#respond Tue, 15 Aug 2023 02:06:07 +0000 http://www.webfilebrowser.org/remote-work-possible-for-only-11-of-the-brazilian-workforce/

Remote working was not an option for the vast majority of the population in Brazil, according to a study on the adoption of the home office format across the country in 2020.

Some 74 million people were employed in Brazil in 2020, of which 8.2 million (11%) in total worked remotely. However, the research points out that the realities in the country’s 27 states and the Federal District, where the capital Brasilia is located, varied widely.

While more than a fifth (23.6%) of those employed in the Federal District of Brazilians in the formal sector worked remotely, the percentage in the state of Pará, in the north of the country, was 3.5 %. After the Federal District, the Brazilian states with the highest percentage of remote workers were Rio de Janeiro (18.7%) and São Paulo (16%), both located in the southern region of the country, followed by Paraíba ( 12.2%) and Ceará. (ten%).

“There is a significant heterogeneity of remote workers between Brazilian states, which may reflect the deep structural differences between local economies and labor markets,” said Geraldo Góes, researcher at Ipea, co-author of the note with Felipe Martins and José Antônio Sena. Nascimento.

Regarding the profile of Brazilians working remotely in 2020, the researchers noted that although the majority of Brazilian professionals employed are men, women make up more than half of all remote workers. Additionally, there was a higher percentage of self-proclaimed white women with higher education among remote workers in all Brazilian states.

Separate research conducted at the start of the pandemic found remote working to be impractical for poor lower-middle and working-class Brazilians. According to the study, 17.5% of Brazilians from less privileged backgrounds who have managed to keep their jobs since the start of the Covid-19 crisis were able to work from home during the crisis.

The picture with regard to the frames is quite different. Another study suggests that the majority of senior executives in Brazil would like to continue operating remotely in a post-pandemic scenario.

The COVID-19 pandemic has closed almost all borders around the world, meaning many seasonal farm workers who travel to plant and harvest much of the world’s crops are stranded in place. This is just one hurdle our food system faces this season, but its effects could be mitigated. To overcome this challenge, farmers rely on one of agriculture’s most trusted resources: human ingenuity.

From planting to harvest, farmers are investing more in tools like automation, digital platforms, and other precision farming methods to keep food production moving.

From planting to harvest and beyond

Planting
It all starts with a seed in the ground. Plants relied on the wind to disperse their fruit. Or a hungry animal. But, with the advent of agriculture, there were hands ready to do the job. Then Machines.

Automation has been a giant leap forward for agriculture, and it now has the potential to sustain the production of our vital food systems, while reducing the need for close-contact farm work.

Spray
Brilliant advancements in science and technology have enabled agriculture to advance even in the face of daunting obstacles. When it comes to sustainably protecting crops and preventing food loss, technology becomes extremely precise.

On the ground and above, precision sprayers protect our food supply while using less water and reducing the use of pesticides.

Monitoring
Ground sensors and orbiting satellites monitor soil moisture, plant health, and changes in temperature and humidity throughout the growing season.

These tools save farmers hours of scouring fields to collect information. When we can minimize manual labor, farms can become more productive, efficient and sustainable.

Harvest
While automation has prevailed in grain harvesting for decades, the technology for picking and plucking delicate fruits and vegetables is still emerging. While this is one of the most visionary fields in agricultural technology, many see it as the answer to the challenges of sustainability and labor shortage.

Automation will play an important role in feeding the 7.9 billion of us in 2021.

Learning
All of these agricultural machines collect data. Together, these technologies act as nerve endings and work their way around the farm. But where is the brain? it’s in the software

Artificial intelligence and smart learning technology are changing the way we farm.

Agricultural innovations make our food system more sustainable. They limit our use of land, water, energy, pesticides, time and labor. The calculation limits guesswork. Automation limits inefficiency. And these growing technologies create different types of jobs in agriculture.

Now is the time to seriously invest in solutions that will not only help us survive this crisis, but also create a more sustainable food system. If we are to meet the demands of a growing world population, we need big and new ideas.

When it comes to the next generation of agricultural tech, will 2020 offer a reset or a total reassessment?
